Scion unveiled its Racing GReddy FR-S race car in January 2012 during the North American International Auto Show (NAIA). The FR-S will be competing in the 2012 Formula DRIFT series with veteran driver Ken Gushi behind the wheel. The FR-S race car will feature over 600 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. The FR-S race car is the product of strong collaboration between Scion Racing and GReddy, a performance-products company that has been involved with Toyota and racing for over twenty years. That means that you can expect to smell rubber and be knocked over in awe of the power that this little rocket will deliver during drift events.
The race car is inspired by the 2013 Scion FR-S, a new compact rear wheel drive (RWD) sports car that will go on sale in the spring of 2012. The high-performance coupe is the fifth model to join the Scion product range and brings back memories of Toyota's Supra. Scion is planning to release the FR-S race car around spring of 2012 when the 2013 Scion FR-S will also be released for sale. Both cars will challenge the current compact sports car scene and the overall racing standards as the new FR-S race car stands to compete with a number of other high performance tuners.
The regular 2013 Scion FR-S stands for a Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport car, which is how Scion is attempting to define their new model. Scion is focusing on bringing a car with balanced performance, handling and style while yielding high MPG at the same time.
The Scion FR-S configuration is unique in the sense that it is the world's only flat boxer engine in a front engine, rear wheel drive setup. Not to get confused with Subaru's WRX STi which is a flat four boxer in a front engine, all-wheel drive configuration. Although it has not been done before, the engine's compact size and flat shape allow it to be mounted fairly close to the middle and extremely low, giving the FR-S a front-to-rear weight ratio of 53:47. Which, for a small compact sports car, is actually extremely good. Some of the best exotic supercars just barely get close to a 50:50 weight balance on their cars, but you would be paying close to $250,000 for it.
The FR-S's 2.0 liter, naturally aspirated flat-four-cylinder engine is the result of a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru. The collaboration between both companies has led to an impressive boxer engine design that is both lightweight, reliable and powerful. The 2.0 liter results in an impressive 200 horsepower at 7,000 RPM and 151 lb-ft of torque at 6,600 RPM. Although official times or estimates have not yet been released for the FR-S, some experts have estimated that it will be able to do 0-60 MPH in around 6.0 seconds. That sounds slow considering that we typically cover Ferraris and Paganis that hit 60 MPH in 3 or 4 seconds but 6.0 seconds is extremely impressive for a car you could put in your pocket.
The flat-four engine can pair to a 6 speed manual or automatic that ultimately delivers the power through the rear tires via a limited slip differential. Scion continues to strongly emphasize the idea of pure balance as they indicate the FR-S's lightweight compact design.
No official pricing has been released for the new sporty compact coupe but you can expect to shell out anywhere between $24,000 for the base and up to $30,000 for some of the fancier options. Bottom line, the BMW 1 series, Audi A3 and Hyundai Genesis coupe are now being challenged by another player: Toyota.
